Easy Binary Option

Independent coverage of binary options since 2012 — legal status, licensing and what replaced the product.

Risk warning

Binary options are high-risk speculative instruments. You can lose the entire amount staked on every individual position, and most retail accounts lose money overall. Nothing on this site is investment advice or a recommendation to trade.

The arithmetic

A typical binary option pays around 80% on a win and loses 100% on a loss. To break even you therefore need to be right about 55.6% of the time, before any fees. The market does not owe you that edge, and the payout is set by the party taking the other side of your trade.

What regulators found

ASIC found that around 80% of retail clients lost money and concluded the product had no evident investment utility. ESMA, the FCA and others reached materially the same conclusion, which is why the product is prohibited for retail clients across the EEA, the UK, Australia, Canada and Israel.

Counterparty risk

On most platforms still offering binary options, the operator is unlicensed and based offshore. That means no compensation scheme, no ombudsman, and no supervisor to escalate to. This risk is separate from, and often larger than, the market risk of the position itself.

Why the structure works against you

On most platforms still offering binary options the operator writes the contract, quotes the price and settles the expiry. It is not an intermediary routing your order to a market; it is the party on the other side of it. Your loss is its revenue. That is not an allegation of misconduct — it is how the instrument is constructed, and it is the specific feature that regulators cited when they banned it.

It also explains why payout percentages cluster where they do. A payout much above the break-even threshold would make the book unprofitable, so it does not happen; a payout well below it drives clients away. The band is set by the operator's margin, not by market conditions.

Bonuses and account managers

Two features account for a large share of the complaints that reached us over the years. A deposit bonus typically carries a turnover requirement that makes the balance effectively unwithdrawable — Japan's regulator banned binary options bonuses outright for this reason. And an "account manager" who calls to direct your trading is a sales function, not an advisory one; that pattern is the one regulators have actually prosecuted.

Check your jurisdiction

Before anything else, confirm the legal position where you live — see legal status by country. In several markets, funding an offshore trading account is itself a breach of exchange-control law.
